Government’s TOPS initiative for Junior Athletes

Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju has said that the government is in the process to launch the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) for the emerging Junior Athletes of India. The aim of this move is to produce talent and Olympic champions by 2028.

Announcement of TOPS Scheme by Ministry

The announcement came during the webinar as part of the initiative “Fit Hai To Hit Hai Fit India”. The other attendees of the webinar included Olympic silver-medallist PV Sindhu, Indian football captain Sunil Chhetri. The Human Resource Development Minister, Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal was also a part of it.

Rijiju addressed everyone and said that it is every Indian’s dream and he is trying to translate it into a mission. It hurts to not see India finish well on the medals tally at the Olympics. The Olympics is the biggest sports event on the planet.

He believes that the people have worked hard to achieve the goals having made a big base. The TOPS scheme is currently in place for senior athletes who are medal prospects for the Olympics. The scheme will soon be launched for the junior athletes as well.

The Vision for junior athletes

The government in due course of time will identify and adopt athletes aged between 10-12 years. They will further take care of the athlete’s needs and prepare them as medal prospects by the 2028 Olympics.

The parents do not need to worry if the government takes them under their tutelage. The government will take care of grooming the athletes and preparing them for Olympics 2024 Paris and 2028 Los Angeles.

The Olympic Task Force constituted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already sent the recommendations. The government is in the process of implementing the same. Sports minister is confident that India will finish in the top 10 at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

During the webinar, Rijiju also brought to light the need for people to become fit. This is a step towards making the country fitter. The Fit India Movement has been steadily contributing to this cause.

Fit India is a movement for the people of India. The vision is to create a fit India and the initiative should grow more. It is important to stay healthy and fit in life.
