The renowned Mohun Bagan Athletic Club, which was founded on August 15, 1889, is one of the oldest football clubs in Asia. The first surprise that the year 2020 gave to the legacy of the legendary club was its merger with the wealthy Indian Super League’s ATK football club. The announcement of the merger was made on 16 January 2020. The merged club will come into existence from June 1, 2020, and will compete in the 2020-21 Indian Super League season and the other competitions organised by the All India Football Federation. The fans of Mohun Bagan Athletic Club were exhilarated about the fact that now their club’s future road map seems to be a bright. The merger was not only a merger of two clubs but also a mixture of rich history and legacy with the modernisation of football.
But this was not all for the fans of Mohun Bagan Athletic Club. The I-League was on and the club continued its outstanding performance in their last season of the I-League. The icing on the cake for the Mohun Bagan fans? Yes certainly. On March 10, 2020, Papa Diawara scored an all sensational historic goal for the historic club in the 80th minute against Aizawl FC to break the deadlock and win the match as well as help Mohun Bagan win their 2nd I-League title.
The Kolkata giants were crowned champions of the I-League 2019-20 season with 4 games remaining in the season equalling the record of Dempo SC who accomplished a similar feat in 2009-10 season. The second-placed arch-rivals East Bengal were 16 points behind and could not catch up to their age-old city rivals even if they won all their four remaining matches.
Even though Mohan Bagan will be playing in the Indian Super League next season, they made their last I-League appearance a memorable one.
