The ongoing Coronavirus pandemic has lead to several changes in the protocols of the sports and testings. A different set of rules were also introduced for doping test in the light of Covid-19. Athletes and sportsperson taking part in the Olympics have to take up this test compulsorily. A series of new rules and announcements were made by the National Anti-Doping Agency ( NADA).
Athletes deliberately avoiding the testing or giving the samples for testing will be banned for a period of four years. The agency has also mentioned that athletes shouldn’t use the excuse of Covid-19 to not test for the same.
Highlights regarding the announcement made for doping test
- NADA has mentioned that they will resume their drug testing for the athletes taking part in Tokyo Olympics and other sportspersons taking part in national camps or other sports activities.
- An athlete is also liable for a punishable offense if he/she refuses to wear disposable masks, gloves and sanitize their hands before handling the samples to the Dope Control Officers (DCO).
- They also mentioned that athletes providing incorrect or inaccurate information can also lead to the ban of four years.
DCO’s safety is the topmost priority
The agency has also announced that they will take all the precautions to ensure the safety of all DCOs. Regular testing will be done to check the symptoms of Covid-19. They also said that officers have maintained a distance from the Covid-19 patients and have even avoided contact with Corona positive patients to ensure that they are safe. The officers have also avoided taking part in the ongoing testings with the healthcare professionals for Covid-19.
NADA has also shared that the DCOs will be assigned with the sample collection drives. The officers above the age of 60 and have any medical conditions such as diabetes, respiratory diseases, or other such pre-existing conditions will not be assigned any duty to ensure their safety. All the DCO will be tested for Covid-19 before resuming the sample collection for testing.
Testings to resume for the athletes soon
NADA has also shared that they are initially going to conduct tests for Olympic probables, sportsperson part of the Registered Testing Pool (RTP), and the Athlete Passport Management Unit (APMU).
