COVID-19 haunts National Sports Award winners

The COVID-19 pandemic scare seems to be never-ending. Sport across the globe has suffered adversely. COVID has affected the National Sports Awards which is scheduled to be held on August 29. The ceremony will be held virtually.

COVID-19 scares National Sports Award Winners

Three winners of the prestigious awards will not be able to attend the virtual event. The athletes have tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss the annual event. This was announced by the Sports Authority of India a few days ago. Out of the three players tested positive for COVID-19, badminton star Satwiksairaj Reddy is one of them.

The National Sports Awards for the first time in history will be held virtually. SAI said in a statement that out of the 74 awardees 65 will be attending the event. Winners will be awarded in seven categories and will be attending the function from different locations.

It has been learnt that nine athletes will not attend the event. Some have been quarantined, some have tested positive and others are out of the country.

Necessary safety measures in place

This year a total of five Khel Ratna will be awarded to athletes across various fields. The winners include Rohit Sharma, Paralympian Mariyappan Thangavelu, wrestler Vinesh Phogat, TT player Manika Batra and hockey captain Rani Rampal. 27 athletes will grace the honours list of the Arjuna Award.

India’s President Ram Nath Kovind will present the awards virtually to the winners. The guidelines issued by the Health Ministry is to be followed at all venues. So, SAI has revealed that all the necessary health and safety protocols are in place.

The Sports Ministry has asked all the winners to undergo a mandatory COVID-19 test. Also, designated centres have been sanitised and social distancing measures have been put in place.   

The award recipients will be present at various SAI centres across the country. President Kovind will be attending the event via video conferencing from the President’s House.  Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju and other ministry officials will be at Vigyan Bhawan for the ceremony. The official ceremony will telecast live on Doordarshan and other social media platforms.
